About Me
Hi! I’m Suezy, an interdisciplinary scientist dedicated to unraveling the complexities of our natural world while also shaping a regenerative future for both people and the planet through impactful research, informative data, & creative communication.
Driven by a profound respect for the interconnectedness of life on Earth and a deep appreciation for the power of curiosity, literature, and analysis, I am committed to exploring innovative techniques that address the intricate intersections of conservation, community, and creation.
Born in Brasil and raised near Boston, I now find myself immersed in the vibrant community of Los Angeles. Here, I am currently finalizing two publications that delve into the restoration and management of the iconic Californian giant kelp species, Macrocystis pyrifera. These publications testify to my unwavering dedication to preserving marine ecosystems and strengthening their resilience in the face of mounting environmental challenges.
Under the mentorship of Dr. Angela Korabik, a NOAA Affiliate, I dove into research that focused on the impacts of increased temperatures on the reproduction of localized estuarine kelp populations. Through meticulous observation and analysis, I uncovered compelling evidence that will aid local community members, such as the Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation and the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe, in implementing strategies for kelp restoration and enhanced fish biodiversity in the area. This work not only sheds light on the vulnerability of these critical ecosystems but also underscores the pressing need for proactive measures to mitigate the effects of climate change and cultivate systematic mutualistic symbiosis.
In my spare time, I find myself in the realms of art, particularly through the lens of photography and the delicate craft of crocheting—a tradition passed down through generations of women on my mom’s side of the family in Brasil. My work in these domains has garnered recognition, with features in photography magazines and pop ups at markets. Much like my dedication to biology, my creative ventures are driven by a desire to understand and celebrate the beauty of the world around me. Whether photographing the intricate details of nature or weaving intricate patterns with yarn, these explorations enrich my connection to the world and deeply inspire me in both my personal and professional pursuits.
In every endeavor, I am driven by a sense of responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the world's well-being. Through my work, I aim to inspire change that fosters a state of synergy between humanity and the environment.
